Kristina’s necklace

Most, if not all, of the jewelry I make is for someone. I make it with the person in mind. When I thought of making this, I haven’t met Kristina yet. In fact, we only talked online. We both were going to Blogher Food and we were going to be roommates. Of course, to those who are not familiar with social networking and building relationships online, this sounds…well, a bit insane. Yet, we exchange emails online as if we were long-time friends. I mean, I know this is starting to sound like a 20/20 segment, but trust me, it’s perfectly normal.

To cut the long story short, we shared a timeshare suite in San Francisco for the conference we were both attending, and it was free of charge thanks to the powers-that-be called her dad. [Haha, what would us girls be without our Pops, eh?] I am so grateful for that, and so I wanted to give her something since she wouldn’t let me pay. This asymmetrical necklace was the product of brainstorming for ideas for meaningful gifts:

I bought the spherical black onyx beads the week before our conference and the almond-shaped beads have been with me for the past 3 years since I ordered them because I haven’t had the inspiration to use them. Until this necklace, that is. The beads are held together by sterling silver wire with a sterling silver toggle clasp. There’s a Swarovski crystal at the end, followed by cut crystal that I’ve also kept over the years, waiting for the piece that would call it. The crystal was just for that extra touch of sparkle, and an option to use in front as a dangling pendant.

I wanted to make a necklace that she can wear to jazz up a casual jean attire, and be an understated piece for a more semi-formal event, both of which are reasons I picked a black stone.

Aside from practical wardrobe considerations, I chose black onyx for its metaphysical properties. Black onyx enhances self mastery, steadfastness, and determination, setting one’s mind to a task. It is a grounding stone and can be used to deflect or absorb the negativity of others, and in that way is a good stone for protection from negative forces and influences. It’s good stone for entrepreneurs (Kristina and her husband founded FishingForDeals.com), repelling negative energy surrounding other people’s opinions or ideas. It helps absorb whatever energy is needed from the Universe.

When I met Kristina, she was bigger than life. She is a breathing, walking party. Fun! She’s also passionate about a lot of things, including food, gardening and tomatoes! I was so happy that she liked the necklace — I think I was more relieved more than anything. Part of the fun of making jewelry (for me) is creating it — thinking of what to make, what would fit the person, and how to put all those ideas into a tangible piece, but the bulk of it is seeing the recipient enjoy it. :-)

Summer

Summer is a mixed bag of highs and lows for me. It must be because it’s my birthday that some really good things come up, and also bad because of those insane full moons, thus the lack of updates.

It’s time to get organized again and I always go back to paper as a start. I’ve been a hardcore Moleskine fanatic for years, and have purchased all sorts of items with closed eyes and wide-open wallet. I usually have a small pocket notebook to jot down random things — passing thoughts, things to do, things to buy, quotes, websites, recipes, etc.

This time, I picked something more fun, recycled, and local.

I first took notice of the company, EcoJot, two years ago when I was trying to look for loose papers with 3 holes and I found a package of the school paper sheets at Chapters. I was initially attracted to the bundle because it is environmentally friendly. I like that. When I can afford to spend a little more, I choose to buy 100% recycled and eco-friendly items.

It’s a great time to make a “fun” change. Check out the pack of three 3.5″x5″ eco-workbooks:

Love them! My go-to journal pen, the Pilot G-Tech C4, writes smoothly on the pages and the ink doesn’t go through the page. The size is perfect to keep in your purse and fits the inside zipper pocket, too. I love it!

So..okay, I’m getting organized, like I said. I’ll post the coffee cup cozy this coming week!

How is your summer so far?

The Expandable Tote Bag

Early this year, I decided that sewing would be my summer hobby. This was made a lot easier because my mom had an extra sewing machine (and no, she’s not even a seamstress). I’m blessed with a mother who sometimes buy things in two’s. You know what that means? If it’s any good, I get one of them! Sweet! She’s a woman who knows where to find the best deals are, too. Now if only I could get her to blog about those deals, then we’ll all be happy shoppers. Haha.

Clearly, my road to sewing nirvana was smooth: free sewing machine = check! My mom also has a huge stash of needles, pins, threads in an amazing array of colors, and pretty much everything I need to get started sewing. All I really needed was to buy fabrics and start sewing!

My first sewing project was a reusable shopping bag, which I’ll post later. This is the second one. When I first saw the the bag at U-Handbag, I knew I had to make it. It’s just one of those things that I could not resist.

Can you blame me?

It has ribbons on each side.

You can untie them to expand and accommodate more goods, say, for the weekend.

The bag and its inner pocket have magnetic closures.

This is the close-up of the patterned fabrics I used and I think this next photo shows the colors the best.

And what can I say? It’s pink and brown: an irresistibly delicious combination. I almost want to set up an appointment with my hair technician right now so she can color my hair pink and purple brown again to match. Oh, but I didn’t keep the bag. I gave it to my mom, who travels on the weekends. She needs it more than I do.

I’m so glad to be done after a four-night affair. It’s well worth the hard work and sleepless nights. I already made a small shoulder bag with the scraps from this bag without any pattern. Yay. I’ll post that later.

So many projects this summer. I love it!

I finally know what to do with this domain. No, seriously. It took years to figure it out. During that time, I cooked, baked, beaded, drew, painted, knitted (or tried to really), printed, cut, journaled and now sewed. Now, things are finally coming together in my head, in the Summer of 2009. This is going to be my own little online place for my crafty exploits. Come sit with me and let’s craft together!
